Distributed identity means identity-related information and verification operate across multiple systems or nodes. The term is broader and less standardized than “decentralized identity.” The distinction is:

  • Distributed: where identity state and verification operate.

  • Decentralized: who controls identity and its trust relationships. A company can distribute its login system across hundreds of servers while retaining complete central control. For .me, your vision combines both: one continuing identity, usable across multiple runtimes and contexts, without any one application becoming its sole authority. What travels can be public keys, signed proofs, and authorized state. Distribution does not require copying your private seed to every node.
